How to Get Started With Flight Training in San Diego
San Diego is one of the best places in the country to learn how to fly — with year-round sunshine, coastal scenery, and accessible airspace, it’s a dream for student pilots.
But where do you start?
Whether you're aiming to become a private pilot or just want to take the controls for the first time, here's what you need to know:
Step 1: Take a Discovery Flight
A discovery flight is a low-pressure, hands-on intro to flying. You'll sit in the pilot seat, taxi down the runway, and even take the controls (under instructor supervision).
Step 2: Get a Medical + Student Pilot Certificate
To train officially, you'll need:
An FAA Third-Class Medical Certificate
A Student Pilot Certificate (I can help guide you through both)
Step 3: Begin Training with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
That's where I come in. I offer flexible, one-on-one flight training from MYF, SEE, and CRQ airports, tailored to your goals, availability, and learning style.
How Long Does It Take?
Most students earn their Private Pilot License in 2–5 months if training consistently. Your schedule is the biggest variable.
